Baltic joint project 'Baltic Atlas' will represent Estonia in Venice in 2016

On October 22nd 2015, Estonian Centre of Architecture announced the winner of the International Curator Competition for the Estonian exhibition at the 2016 La Biennale di Venezia Architecture Exhibition. The members of the winning team are architect Johan Tali from Estonia, Niklāvs Paegle, Kārlis Bērziņš, Laila Zariņa and Dagnija Smilga from Latvia and Jonas Žukauskas, Jurga Daubaraitė, Petras Išora and Ona Lozuraitytė from Lithuania. The goal of the competition was to find the best proposal introducing Estonian architecture and urban design, making the best and most relevant of the country’s architects and architectural thinking visible at the biggest stage for architecture, La Biennale di Venezia.

"Balti Atlas" will present all three Baltic countries at the La Biennale di Venezia Architecture Exhibition together for the first time. The goal of a joint pavilion is to take a step further from the usual national pavilion. "Baltic Atlas" will explore how the geopolitical context of the area, its energy and natural resources, transport infrastructure, human and intellectual resources impact the real built space around us. National architecture has its place in the cultural identity of a country, but when it comes to projects that shape the society and landscape, the impact of cross-border projects is bigger, be it Rail Baltic, Tallinn-Helsinki tunnel, gas pipes, energy plants or oil shale mines.

The first round of the idea and curator call for representing Estonia at the 15th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2016 brought submissions from 22 individuals or teams. Three submissions were selected by the jury for the second round – "Baltic Atlas", "Peatänav" and "Wild-Metsik". All three were invited to present a more detailed plan and idea for the second round. The deadline for the second stage was 19 October, with all participants submitting proposals.

The jury was composed of the following members:
  • Raul Järg (architect, Chairman of the Jury, Chairman of ECA, Commissioner of the Estonian exposition at the International Architecture Exhibition in Venice);
  • Toomas Tammis (architect, member of UEA, Dean of the Faculty of Architecture of the Estonian Academy of Arts);
  • Maria Arusoo (art historian and curator, representative of the Estonian Society of Art Historians and Curators, Director of the Centre for Contemporary Art Estonia);
  • Siim Tuksam (architect, member of UEA, co-curator of the Estonian exposition in 2014);
  • Veronika Valk (architect, Head of Research at the Faculty of Architecture of the Estonian Academy of Arts, Adviser on Architecture and Design at the Estonian Ministry of Culture)
  • Jan Skolimowski (architect, member of UEA)
The competition and the Estonian exhibition at the 15th Biennale di Venezia Architecture Exhibition are organised by the Estonian Centre of Architecture in co-operation with the Union of Estonian Architects and with support from Estonian Ministry of Culture and and Estonian Cultural Endowment.
